Project Ares

Welcome to Project Ares. Your mission? Survive.

The robot you will be controlling is equipped with the latest tech we developed, but it isn't invincible... at least that is what the labs said. You objective is to infiltrate an enemy ship and try to bring caos to them, test that robot to the max soldier.

Gameplay Demo

Since this game is still in a prototype stage, it can have some issues specially when it comes to the intuitiveness of the controls, so I hope this small gameplay demo helps understanding the game better. If there is any issue you have feel free to ask and I will try to respond as quick as I can.

As a side note, I believe the video might not play here on the Itch.io page, because of a setting that is necessary to be turned on for the game to work, so if you need to, you can use this link or simply use the bellow image to access it.

What is this game?

This game was developed in order to test the capabilities of Godot and WebXR. It is simply a proof-of-concept right now, a prototype if you will, that served as a test to Godot, WebXR and my capabilities as a game dev.

I tried to get as much depth of gameplay as I could in the limited time I had to develop this game, and wanted to try to innovate game mechanics when it comes to WebXR, but the performance issues really took this challenge to a whole new level. Despite the game not having great graphics, just adding the AI came with great performance issues, but in the end I feel like I was able to make a fun game.

About the development

I developed this game during an internship, where the company wanted me to test the capabilities of Godot for creating a WebXR game, as this would serve as important information for a project they wanted to develop in the future.

The internship came along as part of my last year of my degree in Informatics Engineering, hence the limited time to develop the game itself.

Future development

Right now the development of the game is on hold, as I want to further develop my game dev skills before developing the game further, the first step would be to make it actually pretty and use proper models. Eventually I intend in continuing the development of the game, specially if people show interest in it, and some of the plans I have are:

  • Having a campaign where you upgrade your robot as the story progresses, unlocking new abilities you can use
  • Adding more enemy types
  • Adding different mission types, like Warframe has, for example having the main objective of destroying the ship you are invading

Assets used

Despite not having a lot in the way of models, I did use some assets for the sounds, and here is the list of them:

Shapeforms Audio Free Sound Effects by Shapeforms

Space Music Pack by Goose Ninja

Note: In case you see an Asset made by you, or by someone you know, being used here without credit, please contact me as I might have forgotten to add it to the list.

Yo this game rocks. Wish it were going to be fleshed out into a full experience. The locomotion, in context with the combative aspect of trying to escape enemies, is really fun.

Glad you like it!

I will eventually be fleshing the game out, just don't really know when because right now I have other priorities... maybe this summer I will be able to allocate some time to it.

Can you make a video of what to do?

I tried following the 'lines' and eventually get to a green cube but nothing happens if you touch it.

The menu on the wrist mentions bullets but none of the buttons fired anything.

It was far too easy to die.

I've added a small gameplay video to the page, I don't really have much free time in my hands right now so it is simply me playing the game, but eventually I can try to add a video that actually explains the game, something like a guide. Still I hope it helps for now!

But going over your issues, the green cubes are actually something you are supposed to destroy instead of touching and the bullets play into the main mechanic of changing the "mode" your hands are currently on, try to press down the thumbstick and then the cube in your hand should change color, one of the UI icons in the HUD should also reflect that change.

The game is still simply a prototype so I'm aware of some issues with the controls and even with the balancing, and eventually will try to fix them whenever I go back to developing this game further.

If you run into any more issues feel free to ask! Any feedback is welcome here :D
